View Full Version : It would be interesting to conduct personality tests of Arsenal fans to see whether there are any

shared characteristics within the groups that want Wenger to stay and want him to leave.

My suspicion is that the ‘in’ group would score higher on empathy and lower on impulsiveness.

That isn’t to say they are necessarily right. It may be that this is an instance where their empathetic side skews their judgement, in the same way that a person of this type may trust people too much and end up being taken advantage of.

This apparent dread or apprehension that it is simply all going to go wrong, a feeling in itself which is based on absolutely nothing.

enough to stay for 10, 15 or 20 years. This is because what clubs strive for - or should be striving for - is stability.

In Arsene Wenger, we found that. I think we'd all agree it is hugely unlikely that the next chap sticks around for even a quarter of that time, given how rare that is nowadays.

So why not eek out every grain of that period of stability that we can? It’s not as if we’re floundering in midtable. We are winning the odd **** cup and marginally underachieving in the big tournaments. Why not squeeze the juice till it’s all gone?

You're making a sterling argument to retain the chap.

Do you think Man Utd fans would agree?

underachievement into achievement. I don’t necessarily see why this is the case.

It took Man City four years to win the Premier League after they struck oil. Why not give Wenger the same time?

Every managerial appointment is unique.

United made a mess of it with Moyes, how we laughed. That does not in any way whatsoever influence the outcome of our succession to Wenger.

Spurs sacked whoever it was and appointed Pochetinno who has been a resounding success. There are and can be very good managerial appointments also.

one of his charges.

Then the recriminations would begin about whether he’s the right man for the job and before you know it, we’re off on a Tottenham-esque 18-year cycle.

That's the worst case - but eminently possible - scenario. And for those who claim to truly "love" the club, this should be a sobering thought.

Unless, of course, the idea that they "love" the club is disingenuous bull**** and they in fact treat football like any other form of disposable entertainment.

Perfectly capable of dealing with a few fallow seasons. And they still have all the potential in the world both inside and outside their current squad.

I don't think Arsenal fans are greedy for success. Do you?

Some will obviously want Mourinho, and that's fine. But, as I said, the ambition is to create a dynasty, right? That's the ultimate dream.

except perhaps for your sort.

You want Wenger to stay, not because of Wenger but because liking Him is your way of distancing yourself from, and showing your disapproval of, others among your fellow supporters that you *really* don't like.

It's almost nothing to do with Wenger at all, imo.

How many times in recent seasons have early defeats seen us “in crisis”, handily enough each time when the transfer window is open and Wenger has time to react should he see fit.

Just out of curiosity why do you seem so convinced things are automatically going to go wrong. It almost comes across as a a perverted sense of justification for many years of sticking with Wenger.

I wouldn't be that bothered if we didn't win the league with another manager, simply that I'm tired of this one, who has been given more than enough rolls of the dice.
A new approach has to be welcomed, it's the only way to get your bicycle out of the tram lines, so to speak.
Nothings going to improve the status quo, accept perhaps a new bass player.

him, so how could I possibly make a judgement?

I can see the arguments for change. I’m merely putting forward the arguments for him staying and stating my own position that, on balance and all things considered, I personally would favour him staying as long as he keeps us in the Champions League.

I reckon I could actually put up a better argument for why he should leave than you.

It's apathy and not just a case of low threshold after twenty seasons.
The CL record has become a standing joke alongside his inability to address the defense.

And, as an Arsenal supporter, you will maintain hope for the best for the AFC regardless?

I agree. Me, too

I put your plea of pragmatism down to a flowery, poetic flourish because I do not believe that you can have failed to notice that many other clubs and many other managers have been winning all those trophies we have been failing to win, all during the time we ourselves have been failing to win them.

But more than loyalty. Fairness, too. Quite simply, he *deserves* the chance to keep plugging away.

And yes, also pragmatism. I honestly see no reason why he doesn’t have as good a chance of anyone of winning us the league. So essentially, all we’d be doing is swapping one bloke who can win it for another. Change for change’s sake, as I said earlier.

One other thing: how on earth can anyone say they want him out when they have absolutely no idea who will replace him. Or who they even *want* to replace him?

Essentially they are saying “anyone but Wenger” and for a manager of his stature, that is ridiculous.

Someone asked me a few months back if I would swap Wenger for Pep. I said yes. But we know Pep won’t replace him this summer, so who will? And without knowing, how can I say I want him out?

So, pragmatism, loyalty and fairness. A good combination, imo.
