Tuesday :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

The early kick-off doesn't help either, unless you leave well before the end.

The last train @ 2220 via Donny don't get you to Kings Cross until 0733 next day. WTF

well two, seeing as they've scheduled the kick off for the end of the bloody rush hour

Especially the peacemeal way it was divided up with different companies having responsibility for track, stations, rolling stock and lines.

Yet again privatisation makes for a worse, and more expensive, service.

Great for the few people who own shares or run the things though.

Interesting that GNER, when brought under public ownership, outperformed the other lines in terms of profitability, punctuality and customer satisfaction.

They had to virtually give that away to virgin to stop all of the other lines looking awful in comparison.

Travelling between London and Sheffield has never been easier - and if you book on time is extremely cheap. That bit certainly works

as you do of foreign as a whole. I don't think you can lay all the blame of perceived problems on the British rail network privatisation either - as mo points out below British Rail was widely regarded as a national joke

expensive. And even less than that to Stratford upon Avon.

You just have to wise up.

It does seem to me, as a regular reader of the Eye's Signal Failures column, that the thing has been badly segmented with the main problem being that none of the franchises can, or are indeed willing, to talk to eachother.

We also subsidise it very, very heavily.

And also when I did Valencia - Malaga a year or two before.

Massively cheaper, trains travelling at 300kmph, more space and a better service.

I don't think it is as dreadful as people would like to make out. Ironically the major problems in terms of service are probably the commuter lines into London bit those are all people from the home "c**ties" so you wouldn't care about them, but to a certain degree this an insurmountable problem of numbers as much as anything. Then, at the other extreme there is the closing of lines in quite rural areas, which I believe is wrong and something privatisation is definitely top blame for (though tbf it is a process that started 50 years ago by a certain chairman of British Rail

Yes, the commuter stuff is awful, and it does need to get better. But also simply getting between cities in this country is a bloody pain in the arse, and prohibitively expensive.

It's essentially 200 squids if someone asks me to make a meeting in london this time next week. Which is silly when you consider the same thing in france or spain would be, at most, 25% of that.

Luis Anaconda

As I said earlier - I have travelled the length and breadth of Britain by train in the past ten years with little trouble. Is this as relevant as your Spanish experience?

I use it off peak twice a week or so and am often amazed at just how efficient and reliable it is

Classic Jorge

That's simply not possible now.

We also pay more in subsidies now than we ever did for the network as it was. We also pay higher, much higher, fares.

It basically makes less logistical or cost sense than it did before. It's also much, much more important given the amount of traffic on the roads is increasing massively.

Luis Anaconda

everthing is fine - bit when you try to go from other cities to non-London places it certainly gets confusing. But that isn't something that is particular to the UK - talk to French people and they'll tell you to get anywhere in France you have to go via Paris. And of course in Italy all roads lead to Rome

Also, it's rather ridiculous that you cant get from Leeds to Manchester, or leeds to sheffield - for instance - in under an hour, usually more. These are places 30 miles apart.

It's actually hurting businesses, or more accurately, hurting commuters.

which suggests to me that it can't be all that much.

I can't comment on the difficulties of travelling by train between two northern hellholes, except to wonder why anyone would wish to do such a thing.

Classic Jorge

...and those places are literally only a few miles apart, surely you can see the need that some people might want to commute between the two.

Leeds being the largest financial centre in the country outside london and manchester being the largest media city outside of london.
