View Full Version : Oooh dear. The missus has asked if she can go for a weekend meet-up

with some buddies to mark the anniversary of their friend's death......on Sunday 15th May, the day that Mikel and Per will lift the Premiership trophy at the Emirates.

Now, this is one of those situations where the *right* thing to do is glaringly obvious, and yet every pore of my being is telling me I simply can't say I'll miss the game.

Would that make me the worst human ever? :-(

which could be interpreted as an act of faux grief.
You know, it's a private gathering for an inner circle, type thing.

You'll be ultimately redundant anyway and not be able to participate in any of that reflective and anecdotal banter for the deceased.

f**k that..

Honestly, I can't imagine anything worse than sitting around wallowing in someone's deadness.

Let the dead bury the dead imo. This sort of mawkishness is unhealthy.

slagging off her ex husband who started posting Facebook pics of him and his new girlfriend while the body was still warm.

Do you mean he was a very recently bereaved widower and then got back in the saddle with indecent haste?

Your priorities are as important as hers.

Ultimately if she is away for the weekend then it is not impossible for her to at least be back for mid-day thus allowing you a good 2-3 hours in the pub before the game.

All parties happy.

Just kidding. I admire the idea of the non-playing club captain. Classy.

Of course, no sooner had I voiced these concerns, our form has gone to ****.

I did that once around 2001/2, a Sunday game v Middlesbrough I think.

I had just returned from Leeds and had not time even for a swift 4 or 5 pints. It was quite awful.

with what is essentially just a football match.

Now for me, the deathiversary is a nonsense and a farce, but I'm playing Devil's advocate.

My argument would be that it's not like she hasn't had it in the diary for months, so she should have made arrangements before now.

Mourning sickness gone mad imo.

No idea when it became a "thing" though, rather than a fact.

months afterwards was her dead husband's best man. Obviously I make no judgement of her in this matter (whatever gets you through the night and so forth), but would question his motivations and sense of decency.

However, I kept my trap shut as it's very much none of my f**king business. They seem happy enough, so good luck to them.

she threw a seven?

In these cases, couples often come to their own arrangements about such things. A man has needs, after all.

I just assume you have never been in a situation which may warrant such a soiree.

I have a good mates 1st anniversary at the end of March and would be reasonably confident of a rake of pints in McSorleys in Ranelagh. It’s an excuse if nothing else, a reason for a group of chaps to meet up who because of the business of ordinary life may not have met up since the funeral.

No pressure on attendance of course.

I suppose it's whether you define it as such, it doesn't seem weird if you meet up around the same time every year. But making it a sort of titled occasion is odd, imo.

that reminds them of the dead person and sit around talking about it for several hours. Then people will start crying. It will be unpleasant.

I'm sure there's no crying at sw's events.

You have 3 months to sort it out. Shirley it can't be that hard.

Altenatively, how would you feel if you told her to eff off and we spent May 15th trying to secure the 4th place trophy? :hide:

Jake

The difference in reaction is really wonderful and I suppose you need both really.

Lasses - "Oh god", tears, hugs, emotionally volatile atmosphere for all

Lads - "f**k/****/oh *******s", silence, I'll get the pints, think positive, crisps, pints, drugs
