I'm supposed to mark myself on my objectives in addition to the marks given to me by the boss, and comment on how well I think I've achieved them. Oh piss off. Especially as you get 3 out of 5 for doing your job, 4 for exceding it, and 5 for vastly exceding it - which suggests that you're only really good if you double expectations and work for free all night.

Like Windows machines, appraisals are a necessary evil of the work place and for appraisals to thrive all it takes is for good managers to say nothing.

Decent kit should form a central part of employee benefits, especially in meeja. This is a central, crucial element of my business philosophy. If you're margins are so tight you're worrying about a score a month on someone then you're model is f**ked any way.

Every employee needs a decent phone and a decent workstation as a bare minimum. iPad if you're seeing clients too.
