Football certainly touches almost every other facet and corner of life nowadays, doesn't it. Maybe in the case of an England international, it could be fair enough. I suspect though that even if the chap in question merely turned out occasionally for the Hound, Horse and Hare Inn, the headlines would still describe him as a "footballer".
