Mr Mason got a bit of a caning in the meeja for not sending off Le Coq at Selhurst Park via a second yellow. I understand that he didn’t get another PL game for two months, which I presume constitutes an official slap, with attendant financial implications. If he was being punished for being too lenient on the cards, it seems odd that the other night he was noticeably lenient on the cards when it came to persistent fouling. It was also strange that Arsenal free kicks had to be continually retaken (after all the persistent fouling) on the correct blade of grass, even deep in their own half, allowing the Saints to regroup every time, and that no time was added on for timewasting despite all the obvious timewasting, and that advantages were played when there was no advantage, and that advantages were not played when there was one.

Anyway, it’s reassuring to know that despite the mystifying nature of some decisions, the refs are all doing their very best to be impartial and fair to all sides, and that these things all even out over the season. Perhaps Mr Mason was evening things out after gifting Arsenal the points at Palace.
