But I have to make a series of international business payments and quite frankly the fees for these are astrobloodynomical. Seventeen quid to make a single payment through swift/IBAN?! Paypal is something like 4.5pc which is still pretty steep.

Can the great financial brains of awimb come to my assistance here? Short of going over there with a suitcase of cash like Johnny Depp in Blow I'm at a bit of a loss.

Normal service of pointless political arguments, long past their sell by date in jokes, absurdly niche cultural references and stolen gifs will now be resumed.

I went for an interview with a forex company once, safe to say by about 20 minutes in neither of us thought the matter was worth pursuing any further.

and straightforward.
Another option if credit card payment is possible is to get a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees. I have a Santander 123 card but that facility finishes at the end of this year so I also have a Saga Platinum card now in readiness (there may be an age related qualification for the latter). They both give the Visa rate at the time of the transaction which usually works out to be the best deal.
