The airport terminal was a shack that stank of goat (there were many of them around, mostly as hand luggage). No boarding pass protocols so Dad orders me to run, across the tarmac and to a distant DC10(?) to secure seats. In the night/dark across the desert sands, in a small storm.

It will be clean and the air conditioning will work, and a new generation will never learn the true 'Welcome To Africa' that one gets from a corrugated iron shed.

Plane delayed, of course, so got to join the lions and whatnot for breakfast.

At the entrance, they had a sort of hospice for the wounded ones there and as we approached, a large gentleman in a cool sunhat was hurling what looked like a buffalos hind leg over the five metre high fence for a, we were informed, recuperating lady lion to haul up into a tree to eat.

I know they have a reputation but lions are really rather clubbable when they've got something nice to chew on. We were able to get within a couple of yards of a large group of them to take photos and they didn't seem to mind at all.
