He was asked the question specifically in relation to a Paris style attack. To not at the very least preface his answer with something along the lines of “Of course in the case of an attack of this nature I would support such a policy, BUT…” can only be wilful political suicide.

Why would he do this? The opportunity was there to both stick to his principles and avoid the mauling he is receiving from inside and outside his own party.
