Kiev being the Russian word so in efforts to underline their new found Ukraineness they changed it to the Ukraine, Kyiv.

Not sure about the chicken but a damned fine meal when all is said and done.

Also, dogs. It's still the Rhodesian Ridgeback rather than the Zimbabwean Ridgeback, for instance, which is a bit politically incorrect of it.

I'm sure they spelled it Kiev since then. Or maybe just we did. Still, if the French are allowed to spell London wrong and we're allowed to spell Munchen wrong then why not?

Although did you see that not only have the Nazis and the 'moderates' fallen out, as Svoboda and Right Sector are rioting against the peace deal with the rebels in the East, but the moderates have spilt the beans that the shooting of the maiden demonstrators which was blamed on the police, and used as justification for the coup, was actually done by the fascists anyway (as many have known all along).

NOW DERE'S A TING

I was taught wee bits of Irish at home from as young as I can remember so it was a very simple qualification/pass to get in respect of requiring passes to move to the next level.

Grade A in both O and A levels. Utterly f**king **** and pointless of course unless I want to be a Garda, Primary School teacher or perhaps work for TG4 but who really thinks that far ahead at 14 or whatever years of age.

It was also a subject that allowed me to get fully immersed in under-age drinking at a relatively early level so another notch in its belt as such.

If you mean we were pretty exclusively taught British history until it got to GCSE, then yes. But to do anything else would be weird. People need to know their own history before embarking on anyone else's. However, the idea that it was all 'Kings and wars' is just nonsense.

Ashberto
10-21-2015, 10:55 AM
And it is perfectly healthy to be interested in trade and industry, whatever one's political view. Essential, in fact.

given that the walls of the schoold were festooned with the names of the thousands of old boys who'd got themselves killed in both lots. No-one seemed to bat an eyelid about teaching us Owen's 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' calling it 'The old lie' while just outside the classroom was yet another board on the walll with a list of dead chaps on it proudly bearing the selfsame legend at the top.

Cognitive dissonance par excellence imo. Mind you, Owen was a bit of a whiner if you ask me.
