I watched Mission Impossible 5 on the weekend which was also very good. Tom :cloud9:

made me basically allergic to the entire genre. I would literally rather watch an Adam Sandler movie these days. I haven't seen Despicable Me, the last couple of Toy Storys or this one - all because of being overexposed to **** like Kung Fu Panda when my daughter was little.

all. It's Canadian, but don't let that put you off.

As Berni has suggested, over exposure to the genre can put you off.

Top direction from Mike Nichols. It just doesn't get any betterer in my book.

have to be 'Zulu' imo. It's just all marvellous - even Michael Caine trying not to be Michael Caine for the only time in his career manages not to f**k it up.

Zulu for you clearly does.

I'm very much the same about The Shining, Spartacus and Reservoir Dogs.

I don't really think either of us is in a position to get on our high horse with the other, tbh.

I find it odd how entire populations get fused with the elite who rule them in some peoples' minds.

But on deterrence, while I do broadly accept the logic, and am not advocating that Britain relinquish its nukes, there are some holes. Take Flexible Response from the Cold War- the doctrine whereby a hypothetical *conventional* Soviet attack would be countered with nuclear weapons. From Britain's point of view any first-strike use of such devices would immediately lead to the entire destruction of Britain, which must logically undermine the credibility of ever using them and thus the doctrine itself.

I fully understand the context of the concept of MAD and so on but it does all hinge on the notion of everybody being sensible about things, and the fillum I referenced posits a scenario where someone, to quote the president, did a silly thing.

It is, I believe, a testament to the respect afforded by both sides to each other in the Cold War that people were actually going to be sensible and logical. I'm not sure the same can be applied to yer Allan Akbars.
