View Full Version : If work was easy it wouldn't sometimes be interesting. Discuss.

What do you mean work isn't ever interesting? What kind of dead-end job do you have?

Personally, and after a massive amount of false starts, job and career changes, I decided what really turns me on is self-determination. I despise being at the mercy of lesser beings from middle and upper management, most of whom find ITV too intellectually challenging.

Other people prefer an easy life, decent pay, status, 'banter' or - and I suspect this is a large section - a tiny amount of authority that they can weild over everyone and anyone which makes them feel a little less insignificant.

Also it's funny some of them don't like the refugees outside the station but they are upset that they don't want to stay in Austria. 'What's wrong with our country' ''why they want to go to Germany'

To do as little as possible, within reason, and to get to 5pm.

When I say “as little as possible” I don’t shirk at all, I do everything my job entails to the best I can do it and very regularly work my *******s off, but I do not volunteer for **** and I have made my position 100% clear to all my colleagues and management with regards to meaningless **** like meetings.

After nearly 30 years of work I have no interest in corporate ladder climbing and have turned down promotions and I suppose you could call it ‘head hunting’. I also backed out of the only recruitment process I have entered in 10 years after the 3rd interview (of 5) as I decided the people were potentially a bunch of c**ts and I could not be arsed putting myself through that.

I know lads, mates of mine, who have jumped from good jobs for better jobs and more dollars, more often than not bad decisions which they regret.

There is enormous virtue in being unambitious.

How do you know how insignificant or otherwise people feel though?

I am an authoritah free-zone, but I know other people would miss my contribution if it were not there. I can find fragments of significance in that, at least.

I am not sure I'd be too fond of it.

But it's been exhausting to be honest. Too many meetings in a short space.

It is in fact the complete opposite, it is utter ****.

I cannot believe I am actually saying this but getting wildly drunk each night, on company expenses, gets tiresome after a while.

Mind you my travel was mainly Glasgow, Bradford, Cardiff and Ireland.

The fact that I can tell any of my myriad bosses to f**k off any time I want means I dont feel trapped in some sort of kafkaesque nightmare though.

I got fed up looking for a good company to work for so I decided to make one.

You know me quite well by this stage so you would acknowledge that as a person I strive on a daily basis for great things.

High powered positions, especially in large organisations, while they may bring rewards in terms of remuneration can be a total ball ache. My last job in London, Edgware Road to be precise, was very well remunerated for the time but I just seemed to fill all my time on reports to people and meetings and budgets and travel, god help me travel.

Life is too short for that ****.

Swedes prefer not to translate the word fika. They don’t want it to lose significance and become a mere coffee break. It is one of the first words you will learn when visiting Sweden, right after tack (thank you) and hej (hello).

Fika is much more than having a coffee. It is a social phenomenon, a legitimate reason to set aside a moment for quality time. Fika can happen at any time, morning as well as evening. It can be savoured at home, at work or in a cafe. It can be with colleagues, family, friends, or someone you are trying to get to know. It is a tradition observed frequently, preferably several times a day.

Accompanying sweets are crucial. Cinnamon buns, cakes, cookies, even open-faced sandwiches pass as acceptable fika fare. It comes as no surprise that Swedes are among the top consumers of coffee and sweets in the world – or that Swedes appreciate the good things in life.

As the sun shone and I bowled down Upper Street I remembered how f**king brilliant it was and how much I loved it and all that London was.

Then I sat down, ordered a beer, saw the little lad sat beside me and realised I am 12 years older and that life no longer existed and indeed would be impossible.

The most important thing for me in a job is an absolute minimum of travel. It just felt like huge amounts of unpaid work, being expected to travel in my own time.

I agree about the ambition btw. Achieving good things is cool but climbing the greasy pole - f**k that.

worthwhile.

Then one of my clients made me a rather silly offer of employment so, I sold the company and started living off the fact that I work for a company that won't sack me, pay my silly money and leave me largely autonomous.
