What I am certainly not doing is implying that Chelsea's hands are in any way cleaner because FIFA's hands are dirty. That would be whataboutery.

To point to similar examples is not to excuse but to provide context. See also: "We all do it".

When it is not done in the context of an argument - as here - it is not.

Nor can there be a right v wrong scenario.

May I remind you of yesterday's disclosures from Sir C re: Waterloo Sunset / The Kinks in general.

Indubitably a wrong 'un but his personal choice.

can be no good or bad other than the subjective. At which point, everything becomes relative and S Club 7 can be argued to be superior to Beethoven.

No. There must be certain benchmarks, otherwise we simply exist in an anarchy of bad taste.

Beethoven is better than S Club 7. Tolstoy is better than Jackie Collins and - by the same token - The Smiths are better than The Jam.

in this one without fully functioning ears? :hoddle:

Morrisey is a whiny, self-pitying, meat-dodging bore with flowers up his arse. And his head up his arse too, in fact.

Berni

However, to say they were better than The Smiths is an error. You may need to have another look at your calculations on that one.

I was lucky enough to see The Smiths having bunked off school and went to Belfast with a mate, quite a deal in those war torn days I tell you.

But I am afraid I cannot concur. A band with 3 stone cold classic albums and many magnificent 45s, some of which never appeared on any album never mind aforementioned stone cold classic albums.

And then there is The Smiths for whom I would only rank The Queen is Dead in such company.

Morrisey's subsequent solo works don't even bear comparison. I will even be generous and allow you to factor in the works of Johnny Marr including Electronic, Modest Mouse, The The and solo.

No, you're wrong.

:judge:

Now I trust that is the end of it or god help me I will be forced to use the "FACT!" card, or even "END OF".

Berni
09-11-2015, 10:49 AM
However, the output of The Smiths (and to a lesser extent Morrissey's solo work) transcend that fact to constitute some of the greatest music ever produced on these shores.

And that, my friend, is a fact. :driving:

No.

Berni
09-11-2015, 10:54 AM
Moreover, The Smiths' music was completely original, while The Jam's was - often deliberately - derivative. The Smiths - for good or bad - went on to dictate the template of (for want of a better term) UK 'indy' music to this day, while The Jam are basically seen as a somewhat naive, dare I say one-note, post-punk singles band.

No. It's The Smiths all the way,I'm afraid.
