It really is time that they stopped inflicting Thomas Hardy on people. Miserable old cund.

They're bloody awful when compared to their Russian and French contemporaries.

Russians go on so, don't you find?

Mind you, I am re-reading some favourite modern Russian stuff at present; Boris Akhunin's Erast Fandorin series. Lovely stuff.

How many has he actually written?

Funny thing about Dickens is like the idea of Dickens, I like the stories and some of the adaptations but I just find him so difficult to read. I blame having to study Bleak House tbh

series, Sister Pelagia.

Bleak House is a bit, well, bleak, isn't it? I think I got lucky and had to study Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby, both rollicking yards, so that set me up.

Mind you, old Chas did mange to write the single most irritating character in all literature, didn't he? I think we all know to whom I refer.

write about situations populated entirely by archetypes or - in the case of Dickens - stereotypes.

Mind you, there's nothing like an English literature degree to put one off English literature. :-)
