It was grim. All the nostalgia in the world won't reconcile me to it.

de-mob coats. The burning embers from the engine were a pain, sometimes. Once I met a lady on a station platform who got a cinder in her eye, but luckily I, a doctor, was on hand to remove it.

That, however, is another story :-(

To be fair, the technology exists to have smoking carriages where you'd never need to smell another person's smoke, but nobody's ever going to spend that kind of money on making smokers happy.
