I love the bizarre idea that using drugs negates your purchase of Free Range Eggs in some unspecified way - as though there were some universal set of scales on which one's ethical choices are weighed.

However, this is the sort of absolutist nonsense that the modern obsession with imagining hypocrisy to be some terrible sin gets you.

Of course, if you could grow organically sourced, fair trade weed then you'd have a massive market for it.

As it is, it's usually grown by vietnamese chaps in suburban semis using electricity hacked in from the mains.

Safe to say the lad's mum couldve written a more insightful argument on illegal drugs.

produced ethically. So, in effect, the blame for its unethical production lies fairly and squarely at the door of those who keep it illegal, not those who consume it. It's like criticising someone during prohibition for putting money in the pockets of gangsters by drinking, when the politicians are the ones have f**ked up the market to the extent that the only people who can supply it are gangsters.

Of course, you could argue that someone of an ethical bent should therefore simply not use drugs. glwtpimo.

Sure, if you're making an argument, being shown to be hypocritical in some way (which, let's face it, we all are if you look hard enough) can be seen to undermine your argument. But why? Just because you may use illegal drugs that are 'covered in blood' doesn't make you wrong if you suggest that perhaps we ought not to holiday in somewhere like Dubai that's built on slavery and oppression, does it?

but not really any choices if we wish to harmlessly enjoy recreational pharmaceuticals.

Perhaps 'hypocrisy' is being stretched to describe scenarios it shouldn't. My problem with it is the 'one law for you, another law for me'. That isn't acceptable in sport, because it isn't fair. Of course life isn't fair but the whole point of a civil legal system is equality for all before the law. Magna Carta.

Law, politics, life, and individual behaviour are all flawed, but that shouldn't mean we abandon all sense of decency. We can still aspire to minimising our hypocrisy, as we can aspire to minimising our greed, unkindness and cruelty.

doesn't work on any schoolboy worthy of the title. They sniff the bull**** immediately. The only way to persuade my boys to live right is to live right myself.

That's why everyone likes girls; they're gullible.

And we're back to hypocrisy again.

Quote:

I think Hume is being unfair to Corbyn and his supporters. It is clear that the same impulse that animates UKIP vote is at work with Corbyn. People are disappointed with mainstream parties because they have not delivered on what was hoped they would and because they show no commitment to principles. This makes people yearn for a return to the basic tenets of their particular worldviews i.e. patriotism for UKIP and state control for left wingers.Whether Corbyn’s ideas are workable or not is neither here not there, at least he seems to honestly believe in his proposals and that alone makes him a better politician that Milliband.

Thanks for the link. I might read his comments rather than the Spiked articles in future, as I know what they're going to say, and many of their BTLers are bigger right-wing loonies than in the Telegraph.
