above all, economical recipes for all the family.

I shall start with a traditional family recipe which my mother brought with her from the Emerald Isle.

Boiled mince.

Serves 4

Ingredients

500g Tesco Value Mince 1.90
Handful frozen peas 0.20
1kg Tesco Value potatoes 0.60

Put the mince in a saucepan with the peas. On no account add any seasoning at all, lest the finished dish be in any way palatable. Cover with water and boil for several hours, ensuring that you achieve the dull, lifeless grey colour so evocative of Irish cooking at its finest.

Do exactly the same with the spuds.

Slop the whole thing on chipped plates and eat, watching the wrestling on ITV to confirm just how depressing your miserable existence is.

Cost: 67 pence per miserable person.

Not too much minced here.

I end up with barely enough to keep body and soul together.

Bitter, insecure and borderline psychotic.

This would have an adverse affect on the freshness of the meat and fish therein, and the whole housekeeping budget went at once on filling the freezer up for the next month.

Somewhat rancid meat and fish for dinner every weekday. :-( The corned beef sandwiches on sunday were a luxury.
