View Full Version : Anyway. On to more important matters. Which is better, pork pie or gala pie?

For me, while gala pie should be better due to the boiled egg, it usually disappoints. as the pastry/jelly/meat ration is thrown out of whack.

Though I think it's worth mentioning that the Melton is a subset of Pork Pie and not the default setting.

There's a pork pie war going on up here, it's carnage.

exclusive rights over Stilton cheese, with the result that cheese made in Stilton itself cannot call itself Stilton.

Anyway, you haven't answered the question.

The egg simply has no place in a pork pie, it should f**k off back to the Scotch Egg. I'd take your melton over any other pie.

The strangest thing about the north is that they give you the option of a warm pork pie. The jelly is all warm and molten :-(

If you ever want to eat one again, I must recommend that you never find out what the calorific content of a pork pie is. :-(

I must assume they cooked it a bit first and then rolled it in breadcrumbs. :sherlock:

Essentially your king of pies, or to open the discussion further a pastry based hand-held combination of meat and veg, is your Cornish Pasty.

Or your Jamaican Pattie. There was a wonderful late night place beside Finsbury Park station back in the proverbial day.

I knew I wanted chicken for my main course, but was concerned that also ordering "crispy hen's egg" to start was tantamount to genocide. Never one to decline an opportunity to invoke Paul Simon, the Gentleman regaled me with a rambling yarn about the song Mother and Child Reunion, which only ended when I declared myself happy to devour the chicken AND the egg. It paid off, the egg -- through semi-poaching, freezing, breading and wrapping in Serrano ham, before deep frying -- had been transformed into a crisp, salty masterpiece that flooded the plate with its brilliant yolk when I punctured it. A magnificent rendering of complementary flavours, ham, egg and leeks with caper vinaigrette.

More manageable than having to go through each process or an order by order basis.

You could probably bypass at home were you so inclined. I have had the Pichet one a few times and can heartily recommend.

Too dry and heavy, I find it. Or maybe my body is insisting that if I must consume too many calories, they must all come from alcohol.

Gimme that gala pie and a pint, and you can have my pastry.

What do you eat instead? I've a strong suspicion it's pulses, squashes and forms of grain.

This is terribly disappointing.

How dare you. I do eat the odd meat pie. But only really enjoy the pastry if I'm very hungry.

Meat, veg and gravy in the evening. And beer.
