Though she despises Canada and Canadians.

Apart from marrying one and moving there for 3 years of course. Though that might what did it.

massive great places. Full of people, energy, endeavour, huge economies, scientific discoveries, you know, stuff.

Then there's Canada and Australia. Enormous. Population of about 26 people, none of whom ever do anything worth mentioning in the international press.

It's odd.

(Not to say Canada isn't very nice. No offence to our Canadian viewers.)

Big army. Space programme.

Sort of big in general.

I suppose the main contribution are 'celebs' who sneak in and people just assume they are americans and Maple syrup.

Savages, really, the Russians. Besides, their important artists and thinkers all came from a tiny social group that spoke and thought in French.

Great in one sense (everyone gets fed and not many people get shot), but it doesn't tend to make you very creative or innovative, does it? You need conflict, competition and strife for that. It's one of the reasons western Europe is thought to have become militarily dominant - that it was so crowded that it forced technological innovation (usually in the form of new ways of killing each other).
