advice people. whats the best way to ask for a reference

been with marketing job part time along with other background film extra work for few years . I not asked them for reference in long time. I have one person who knows me well their but not asked her for ages.

Is it best by email or phone. Not looking for other work at them but might at some point in the future.

these are things best asked face-to-face I find. If neither of you smoke I'd suggest asking them for a quick drink at lunch or after work as "there's something i want to pick your brains about".
