West Wing etc etc

Now, when we get onto Corrie, I'm all over that

The nudity I can find elsewhere

I do suspect i'm missing out though

A friend of mine organised it this year - all looks rather energetic

I saw the first one when it was released at the cinema and thought it ridiculously juvenile. I was 12.

I'm mostly in it for the violence and plotting. Although the shagging and nudity help.

year, they all look knackered.

Still my intention to take part 1 year, just have to find a team that needs an old plodder

But other than those things it's perfectly realistic.

I more than many others. We may only strive for improvement; perfection will, I fear, remain beyond our grasp.

it such a batsman's game outside these islands that it's become utterly tedious.

It's got laser guns and lightsabres, though. And a wookie. These were good enough for my 10-year-old self. Nowadays, not so much.

However, I am an adult.

Of course, you could maintain a joyless existence like your mate over there, refusing to ever act anything other than your age plus a score, like some sort of odd victorian character.

Perfect for a hungover sunday on the sofa with the kid imo.

clearly the sounds the guns make is crucial to the breadth of the audience

'war films' is an entire genre containing hundreds of movies, see? Were you to have said ESB is as juvenile as 'The Guns of Navarone' or 'Where Eagles Dare', I'd have agreed with you. However, were you to have mentioned 'Das Boot' or 'Paths of Glory', 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' I would not.

And you know full well Paths of Glory gets a pass. You are aware that it's commie propaganda though, arent you?

A Bridge Too Far.

Master And Commander, indeed.

boring as a kid. The whole Yoda/Luke thing was f**king tiresome, as was the endless flying through space, Han/Leia flirting and flying into a space whale thing.

Hoth was good fun (ace battle) and Cloud City was good. Everything else was boring. At least RoTJ kept up the action pretty continuously.

Kubrick's early work generally was a bit lefty. Spartacus was written by Dalton Trumbo (who was blacklisted) and was actually the first film where JFK crossed a McCartyite picket line to watch it.

You resisted it for years. Obviously, Stephen's totally wrong, but I think Crowe nails Jack, while there are some other lovely bits, not least David Threlfall as Killick.

I rather enjoy it.

Crowe doesn't work for me as Jack. He just doesn't fit the picture in my head.

Berni

pretty much Russell Crowe.

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

But Jack has that vulnerability and the constant potential to turn into the village idiot.

However, it became a cliche probably faster than any other movie I can think of. You've probably seen it parodied hundreds of times without ever seeing the thing itself.

Mind you, even at the time you knew that Top Gun was ****e, but had funny lines and full access to some of the coolest machines on earth, so you forgave it.
