all the sinking ships and such, but at the minute it seems like they're just helping out the traffickers. "You start the journey and we'll pick them up half way and finish it off" sort of thing. Hardly a detterent.

hands about it. As I've said before, the most effective and genuinely humane thing to do would be to declare a policy of forcible deterrence and then very publicly sink a couple of the boats. This would deter the traffickers and the migrants and probably save thousands of lives and untold millions of pounds.

They won't, of course. No democratic politician would get away with being that utilitarian. Doesn't stop it being the right thing to do, though.
