Salt and Light

What do all of te following people have in common: Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah, Esther? well, they are Biblical characters of course: but they all had one thing in common: they put aside their comfort for the sake of bringing salt and light - the "Kingdom of God" into the social and political sphere of their day. Not for them the quiet, contemplative life. Nehemiah gave up a very cozy job as a royal wine taster to rebuild the damaged walls of Jerusalem in the 5th century BC. Joseph of course effectively became Prime Minister during the famines of ancient Wgypt. Esther found herself in the unlikely position of acting as intercessor between King Ahasuerus and the Jewish people, preventing a potential holocaust of hideous proportions. Daniel rose to become a prominent civil servant in ancient Babylon, but managed to remain true to his faith.


God will not be calling us to become MPs or even local councillors. But Jesus did issue a challenge to all of his followers to become "salt and light" in the world.


"You are te salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Mathew 5:13-16, NIV)

In 1787, William Wilberforce made the decision to continue his parliamentary career, rather than opt for a different one, in order to become salt and light in the world. The outcome of that decision was eventual abolition of the slave trade in 1833. Today, 2015, we may not be able to pass legislation which affects global events, but in our villages, towns and cities, we and our local churches still face many challenging issues of social justice - what will be your response?

I just quoted 'Cohen and Cohen' and made it up. passed with flying colours.
English Lit was another matter due to difficulty with the texts. I was too pissed to read them.
