It's always upset me that Dover, our Gateway to the continent, should be a place of romance, of mystery, of bay-windowed Georgian houses on little cobbled streets, cosy little inns full of piratical-looking types; there should be a seedy dock area with ladies of negotiable virtue, there should be roistering sailors and fish restaurants and chandlers, there should be 5 star hotels and a casino.

All these things should be. But aren't.

I'm not one to go around calling places ****holes but Dover does struggle somewhat to charm. Cracking castle though - well worth the visit.
