The Nepalese are used to earthquakes. Poor old John from Didcot probably died confused and scared.

There's almost nothing to say that the random british person is anything more like me, or you for that matter, than a frenchman, an australian or someone from Kenya.

And to be perfectly honest I don't give a f**k.

I have of course a sense of what is a normal human reaction to these events and feel sorry for the family who have to deal with the loss but I am not going to pretend to be personally affected in any way.

Unless I then happen to know the person, which is unlikely, then I might be a wee bit pissed off.

Unless I didn't like them.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I have anything more or less in common - save possibly that we might have watched the same **** telly - with someone from this country.

I find it a weird, strange, insular and myopic idea that nowadays people still think like this.

even down to something as trivial as the area of a city the person is from.

If I hear someone has died in north London, I am instinctively more interested than if they were from south London. I wonder whether they live near me, whether I have ever passed through the spot that they died, whether it means I should feel less safe, and numerous other questions that stem from the possibility that their lives bear a resemblance to mind.

All of these things are interwoven with the levels of empathy you will feel for someone.

I'm not sure what more, or less for that matter, I share with your average british person, if such a thing exists.

Crucially, I'm not really sure how much more I'd empathise with someone dying based on their proximity to me. The whole thing doesn't really make any sense.

It's just crass and I wish the news would stop reporting stories like that.

If I asked for the f**ker raw I could just nip over to the field next door and bite one.

French and German families mourning their loved ones after the Germanwings crash than the various Asian ones of recent times.

There is also the factor that Malcolm Gladwell discusses about it being more morally virtuous to want the underdog to lose sports events, because the fall to earth would be much less harsh for them than for the favourites.

In the case of personal misfortune, people in poor countries have **** lives anyway and so they are likely to be less affected by trauma as they are used to it. For someone who lives in the comfortable, affluent west, the impact is likely to be much greater and they are therefore more worthy of our empathy.

He's a dull man, fond of lazy and clumsy metaphors. It's the type of stuff the intellectually challenged read so they can appear clever,
