I really liked Manchester, except for Cheetham Hill, Moss side and Rusholme, which were probably no worse than places like Stratford and Manor Park, to be fair.
Not sure about Salford but you don't hear particularly good things about the place.

I'm not helping here am I... but on the basis you've put up with Chelmsford/Colchester for years, how much worse can it be :shrug:
