But this leads to the question where should I buy?

Do I really want to pay over the odds London prices with not much to show for it.

We both work in London but maybe it's worth to bugger off. Buying property is a whole new world to me. Therefore I have no idea what I am doing. Seems a shame to piss away rent.

spend.... do you have a view on house prices going fwd? Do you see you both staying in london? What can you afford to buy, will it be big enough when any future PSPVH's turn up.

If you see yourself moving jobs/location then no harm in renting... you were talking about going to Canada less than a yr ago, is that all over now?

Plus whilst I have changed somethings in flat I don't have the freedom to do what I want with the place.

I have an arrangement with the landlord that I can do whatever to the place as long as it's for the better. Hence the new sink. Not sure she'll like my choice of paint for the hallway.

Plus I want a garage.

Are you funding these home improvements yourself?

The sink was a demand of my wife. (nothing wrong with the old one) so I made her pay for that.

Apart from that I won't be doing anything else.

decided that it's the wrong time for it. we've both got jobs and to start fresh in a new country might not be for the best.

In the meantime I am trying to put a 3rd of my salary in the bank a month. So that's slowly building up.

Not only are you paying his mortgage but also funding home improvements which ultimately may allow him to increase the rent.

swing then can trade bigger / more expensive if you keep on upswing then as you get older / peeter off and once you have paid off lots of the mortgage etc then its easier and nicer to retire to nice gaff out in the stix or near the sea or sell and buy a small place out in balerics etc.
Also means if you then set up own business in future or have kids etc can move out to burbs and have some spare cash..its like having a pension really.

there are very few areas of London that you could find now that MIGHt be up and coming at some stage.

Only bit of advice is buy the worst house on the best street and do it up
