I like to but these days it seems cheaper to fly abroad than staying in a place on the weekend. Especially friday and saturday nights. It's better now that we have the car but if you had to add train fairs and hotel just to go away for 2 days it's not worth it.

You have a car. Do a long weekend road trip man! They're brilliant. Don't book, just DRIVE. At about 5pm start looking for somewhere to stay.

and stay in a very cheapo hotel just for a sleep. It is then only a short drive to your destination on Saturday morning. This is assuming you want to go somewhere that is at least a couple of hours drive, like Lake District, Cornwall, Yorkshire, Scotland...

Then once there you might want to stay in a nice B&B, which doesn't need to be that expensive. Maybe and savour the local quisine for dinner somewhere. Something proper poncy, or a nice pub. Yes, even in Scotland they do nice food.

Break up the drive back on Sunday by stopping somewhere nice, or take Monday off and enjoy all of your Sunday.

The ideal is of course to combine this with an Arsenal away game :-)
