View Full Version : You know who was a ridiculously underrated footballer for us?

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

Freddie Ljungberg.

The 2002 double was won because of his understanding with Bergkamp. Henry was simply gilding on the lily.

As a footballer.

My belief is not in any way to diminish the role he played in the 2002 season end.

Don't spout this 'assists' nonsense at me. I can't and won't allow the beautiful game to be destroyed by Yanqui neologisms.

You'll be telling me about his yardage next.

It makes my sould weep. See also, 'heatmaps'.

f**k off everyone.

Chuck in some cameos from Denilson; we were beautiful to watch that season.

and it all becomes clearer. It was Freddie's Key Dribbles in the Final Third ratio that won us that title.

Good fishing, by the way. You got your main quarry, and a bonus extra.

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

yee-haw and fire his six guns in the air.

Jorge is very keen on the American version of 'sport'. There is no pleace for the creativity of a Ljungberg in there.

Specifically the term "assist" being one of the singly most useless figures in football.

Stats in general, certainly when used in isolation, have always to me promoted football analysis for the retarded.

His contribution as a footballer was overlooked, to a degree, by the majority - people of little knowledge, for example, were impressed by Henry's goals.

So, so obvious.

His ability to work for Bergkamp and to create the space for Bergkamp to make the team tick was what he should have been exalted for.

Mainly because he scored a lot of goals. The better trained eyes recognised him as a good footballer made temporarily great by bergkamp.

Children and child-like fans adored him and dyed their hair.

I wouldnt know, i wasnt really watching. I spent all my time watching bergamp. I was worried i would miss something incredible if i took my eyes off him for a second.

The use or or analysis of stats is a great thing for the managers and professionals involved in the sport.

The thing is that they are used and viewed as a whole and not just the fact that player A covered 10k in a game, for example. You or I probably could not even begin to know the full range and definitions of what they look at.

As you say, it (data analysis) was used as a tool early in the decision by the club which ultimately saw Gabriel arrive.

The thing I hate intensely about the assist stat is well documented. It is too simplistic, too singular in its award.

As an example think fondly of Pires' winner in the cup semi final at Old Trafford against Spurs. A wonderful moment in time, a goal created and made almost entirely by one man.

Not the man who go the assist mind you.

You are looking at Williams going when Thomas broke through into that area of the field, then Richardson pushing Davis out of the way when the glory days of 1989 arrived.
