For the record, what I *actually* know about their industry you could stick in your eye and never feel it. And yet I seem to have got away with it. Indeed, they keep coming up to me and asking questions as though I were some sort of authority.

Too lazy, or are just winging it themselves most often. Few bother to properly inquire into things. Easy answers are best. Just follow the crowd. It's always a wrench to discover the emporer is naked, and never fun to be the one to say so.

That's the thing about 'getting away with it' - you can never deceive yourself unless you are deluded to begin with.
