He was the voice of the sport my entire, cricket-watching life. The perfect commentator: calm, unobtrusive, intelligent, incisive, authoritative, witty, wry, passionate and fundamentally decent.

What is more, he was that well-known oxymoron, an Australian gentleman.

I am genuinely sad this morning.

In my youth. I loved the fact he refused to sell out to pay TV and would only work for a public broadcaster.
