At a basic level I would imagine he would like to try and prove to Chelsea that perhaps they were wrong to drop him so early in his career given the career he had with them. Of course this situation was slightly confused by the fact they already owned Courtois and their hand was forced.

As a top professional he would simply want to prove himself to still be able to operate at the highest level and (with us) in a side that is potentially coming to a peak. Cue “next season we will challenge” comments.

He would be 33 when he joins any club in the summer, so old for a footballer but not past it (for a keeper). Jens Lehmann was older when he signed for us. Edwin van der Saar was older when he joined United from Fulham and he was good for another few seasons, very good in fact.

Cech is still a top class keeper and probably an improvement on our current two (though I would need to wait for Peter to give a categoric statement on same).

More to do with improving and if players are available, and attainable, that will improve the side then why not go for them.
