View Full Version : Ashberto: I wasn’t advocating positive discrimination. I was asking why someone who objects to

people's livelihoods being adversely affected by their opinions would, in the next breath, admit they would negatively discriminate against a job candidate on the basis of their opinions.

You use of the ‘culture’ is convenient as it makes your own conduct appear trivial and insignificant by comparison. But refusing to give someone a job based on their opinions is a direct demonstration of this culture in action.

Someone who objects to twitch-hunts, but is willing to be complicit in their consequences, is on a pretty shaky moral high ground.

I've railed and raged against nepotism as much as the next man, not to mention people's irritating ideological inconsistencies, but it's a fact that people unconsciously discriminate in hiring.

tbf, I don't think it was the best example. I don't think Ash is a hirer/firer type anyway.

Can you in all conscience hire a black person/woman/homophobe in a customer-facing role - possibly as a salesman - knowing that however good the candidate may be, they will not be well received by your customer base?

What I'm saying is that sometimes discrimination is a valid business choice.

I had one ring me the other day to tell me I hadn't given him any feedback on his last article. I told him I'd signed off his invoice, which was all the feedback he needed. Cheeky c**t.

*Should I ever start freelancing again, etc, etc

argument - then I became a commissioning editor and realised they could f**k right off. Particularly the ones who think you are doing them a favour and the "I won't work for less than 75c a word" - then you won't work love

by a zealous priggish mob with twitchforks, I now need to go around hiring Nazis to prove that I’m not a hypocrite.
I could spend the day trying to untangle your moral and logical convolutions, but I have a lot of work to do, and I’ve already poured a lot of effort into this topic.

If we had a proper grown-up forum structure we could spent months wrangling over this at our leisure but because AWIMB is basically only good for 'your mum' jokes we will have to struggle on with what we’ve got.

Anyway, as Jorge said, I don’t hire anyone. I am a humble proletarian at the bottom of the capitalist food chain. Albeit a highly skilled one.

and yet you admit you may not be prepared to enploy then yourself, if you thought it would be to the detriment of your business

Also, there is the relationship between an individual and their employer, and there is a baying mob making that decision for the employer.
