So even if instant death only involves this initial, extremely fleeting experience of pain, it's still not correct to say you wouldn't know anything about it.

It is reasonable to assume that most of them would have died almost instantaneously though some may received horrendous but non fatal injuries and possibly survived for a few seconds in considerable pain.

While this rather depends on where you're shot and from what range you are shot, I would suggest that the period of time you'd be alive for would be insufficient for your body to process the messages from the nerves, send them through your spinal cord, CNS and brainsteam and for your brain to register pain.

You'd be dead before you know it. Comforting?

Let's presume you are shot in between the eyes from 1km (sniper fire).

We know that sound will take X seconds to travel 1000m and that a bullet will take Y seconds. We know that someone shot between the eyes dies in Z milliseconds, on average.

However, I concede that if you're shot in the stomach then you are likely to hear the bullet that kills you.
