The asian guy said he was really fast at running, but "not as quick as I was, I used to be ninja quick". They both chuckled and went about towelling down their sacks.

You hear a fair bit of that sort of thing in Bradford but never really interracially.

In some ways I think it points to a more tolerant coexistence, like when I grew up we'd call each other all sort of racial epithets, without any sort of malice, because that's what we were.

It was hard to know how to react. I kind of wondered for a moment whether it was his way of showing whitey that he's better than those darkies. Whitey's equal, unlike the blacks, if you will.

So, at the end of the day, I was the more racialist of those present. :-(

I get where you're coming from though.

I was telling a story recently about my childhood friend, who was nigerian, and about how hard his mum used to hit him. I said that if I was in his family I would be dead by now, the way I behaved as a kid.

One of the people from the same party, middle class white lady with a social conscience, apparently found it very offensive and asked her husband to ask me not to tell racial jokes.

It wasn't even a joke ffs, people are flat out too scared to even talk about race.

I like jokes about nationalities because they often satirise national characteristics. Taking the piss out of the French for going on strike at the drop of a hat, for example, is as racist as taking the piss out of Nigerians for telling fibs.

Neither party here is a race, of course, and everyone understands that these generalisations are, just that, generalisations. Plus, crucially, everyone understands that it is a joke.
