that the miners' strike ended, thus ending the coal mining industry in Britain for ever. It also saw the effective end of the labour movement as a political force, and within ten years the left had mutated into a Thing driven by identity politics and humanitarian imperialism.

The right changed too, robbed of its class enemy it converged with the direction of what was left of the left to bring us to today's managerial politics where some pretend that there is a meaningful difference between the parties but in reality there is little between them.

Drove across what used to be Wath and Manvers pits recently, it's f**king over. It's all roundabouts and call centres now.

Welcome to the new servitude

say that it sounds better than breaking rocks miles underground and dying young of black lung or by being buried under several million tonnes of rock.

Mind you, that's just me.

times.

They (brothers) were both down 't pit as apprentices when the mines closed, because, 'That was what you did.' No one considered anything else.

Then you ended up f**ked or dead by the time you were 50.

One of them is now a middle manager in industry and the other runs a successful haulage business, and they both think it was marvellius for them and for their communities that they were forced to look outside the pit for a way of life.

I doubt they're the only two with this view tbh.

degree as part of their redundancy package. While they liked to rail against Thatcher and whatnot at the time, I think they were mostly doing that in order to f**k wide eyed lefty middle class girls. I suspect that - if they were being honest - they would have admitted this was more fun than being in a coalmine.

Better to light a candle than curse the darkness* imo.

* NB. This may not be good advice in a coalmine

where men still can do real mans jobs as they havent been destroyed by thatcher ;-) they loved the mines by the way and was good for clever blokes as well who didnt just think they were in them forever it was often like the army a 5 year first step ..and the mines kept the communities together and cut crime compared to the bookie / steroid ridden **** holes the valleys now often are.

anyway im so happy politics is so simple..people always make out its so complex..idiots eh ?

that was prosperous and not replace it with anything..no worries though as it now costs far more in benefits and policing than was saved in the first place! joy

put some investment into the area afterwards as they had just sold the countries assets to there mates it would have been good to re-invest some of it in the area. would have saved them money in long run

And it sounds like things worked out well for your uncles. They went somewhere where their skills were of value in a profitable industry that doesn't have to be propped up by the taxpayer. Result all round.
