Obviously not a patch on the best ever book about comedy, How I Escaped My Certain Fate, by the boy Stewart Lee.

Glendinning is the Harry Redknapp of the football journalism world, wearing his ignorance as a badge of honour. So I picked him up on it and he subsequently spent most of Saturday evening sending me increasingly unintelligible and rambling tweets in response.

Was quite funny.

f**king imbeciles to a man.
How the f**k anyone can appreciate the bouquet and infusions of a top wine when chugging down one of my dear friend Ravi's morning arse burners is way beyond me.
Half way into one of his lamb vindaloo's and one's mouth is rendered utterly useless at deciphering wine.

Quite the moment this morning in the office kitchen as I calmly explained to some very over excited colleagues that I had not in fact watched the win over England and instead watched the Capital One Cup. Fair to say they looked at me as if I had just done a **** in each of the cups which they were using to prepare a warm beverage.

I kept it to myself that I had preferred to watch the Eredivisie before the action from Wembley.

already had to digest the fact that I was at all interested in rugby (I only ever watch internationals - I'm not a pervert), was also trying to process my sudden Irishness in supporting Ireland against England.

Complicated business, national identity imo. :hehe:

However, he seems to be carving out a niche as the Guardian's resident likeable simpleton in the same vein as Tubes from Soccer AM and Karl Pilkington, and so his name is slowly and unfathomably spreading.

his interest was very late on-set and he had zero interest in the sport when he first went to Italy.

And as we both know, it's in childhood that a sport hooks you. After that, you can be nothing more than a casual observer.

The decor is 'modern chic and then the money ran out'. The barmaid was New Zealandish, sweary, pregnant, aggressively flirtatious and - I'm fairly certain - drunk. The highpoint was when she said to a customer over the phone who was wondering why her cheque for some do hadn't been cashed "Well it's probably been thrown away. What sort of a bloody idiot still uses cheques?'

I shall definitely be going back. :hehe:

It was on the BBC, even, so there was no excuse for these people to be taking up the whole pub on a matchday.

I angrily went out for a smoke and considered taking my business elsewhere, but fortunately when I went back inside the football was on and the rugger buggers left.
