"He was all handshakes and convivial small talk about the south of France and after some reminiscing he wished them a good evening out in London. “I would like to give you some tips but I can’t,” he said, an admission of how he still isn’t any sort of man about town after all these years.

The vignette offered a reminder of how absorbed he has always been about management. During his 18 years living in London it has become a running joke that he knows his way between only three places – his home, the training ground and the stadium."

How can you spend 18 years in the greatest city on earth and not revel in it?

Conte, the Cannes general manager, recalled in Xavier Rivoire’s biography of Wenger how they would spend long evenings talking about nothing but football. Others remember how Wenger would spend almost every waking hour at Monaco’s ‘La Turbie’ mountain training base.

“All he had in his flat was a bed, a settee and his television,” one former colleague said. “It was always in a right state. He’d never attempt to keep it tidy. His office had video cassettes strewn around the floor.”

is a very deliberate red herring.

We already know he boffed that rapper.

Also, my girlfriend' aunt, who knows f**k all about football, asked if I knew who Arsene Wenger was, because her glamorous, middle aged friend who met him through her job in hospitality had recently told her he'd been trying to nob her for months.

villainy.

I don't like to think of him traipsing down the aisles of the local Sainsbury's, being abused by Jewish Sprurs-supporting second hand car dealers and the like. I can only hope he does his shopping with Ocado.

Why would *any* rich person in north London live anywhere other than Hampstead?

Come to think of it, why would any properly rich person in London want to live outside Mayfair or St James'?

Mayfair etc is real money and Russians.

Hampstead, as nice as it is, is footballer players and pop stars.

as all* the houses are bought up by oligarchs and Saudi princes as investments and left empty.

*Possible exaggeration.
