A European war between nuclear powers? I'm not convinced Putin is that mental. I could be wrong, of course,

When those nasty Russkies start dropping lead on Dublin we're going to have to sort them for you, aren't we? :sigh:

ago where Putin flew two Tu-95 bombers straight through the English Channel was a rarity. I understand that he usually sticks to more open areas.

Anyway, I'm not really sure why he bothers. It seems a pointless exercise for all concerned. Did you see we had to summon HMS Tyne to see of some Russian battleships in the channel last week?

You'd think that after making such a fuss about being independent, you'd do something to secure that status.

Well equipped to defend the skies of the Republic?

Many good men were lost to keep that dump and now we're at it again?

Or do we presume they use their own internal radar to steer clear of Captain Smith in his B7378?

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

Of course, as far as Snin is concerned, Putin can do no wrong.

British. They made no pretence of neutrality.

That said, there were plenty of die hard Anti-Treaty men who made no secret of sympathising with Germany. Equally, Dev's rather ostentatious efforts to be seen as neutral were pretty distasteful at times, I'll grant you.

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

Sympathisers and apologists. Imagine what a squadron of Liberators based at Shannon could have done for Atlantic convoys? The blood of how many British sailors stains Ireland's flag?

and Britain could have done nothing to protect them. Even if they had, to essentially make yourself a vassal state of Britain just 20 years after independence would have been politically impossible to sell to the Irish people. Churchill supposedly offered the six counties in return for use of Irish ports, but there is no f**king way he could ever have delivered that and the Irish had f**k all reason to trust Churchill anyway.

All in all, it was all very unfortunate, but I do think the black nd white English version of the story is rather simplistic.

We were discussing the actions of the Russian Air Force and the UK's response to that. You have now started talking about the actions of other countries which are militarily engaged in war zones. You might as well add some story about your milkman, for all the relevance it has.

Do you get your news from Russia Today?

British troops on Irish soil for any reason at all would be a near-impossible sell for any Irish government now. In 1940 it was simply unthinkable. No government could have done it even if they'd wanted to.

You also have to bear in mind that in 1940 it looked unlikely that Britain would win the war. Given which, what Irish government in their right mind would have thrown their lot in with Britain and suffered the potentially terrible consequences to no good end? It would have been a wildly irresponsible thing to do.

You have to bear in mind that the primary concern of an Irish government was - rightly - the welfare of its state and its people. That cause would in no way have been served by breaking neutrality in Britain's favour. Purely from the perspective of a small, defenceless country sitting in the middle of a world war, the Irish government's decisions were the correct ones.

The British are so pleased with their narrative that all their interests coincided with right and civilisation and all that jazz that they tend to forget that the picture looked a bit more complex for others at the time.
