View Full Version : Did anybody catch that Channel 4 'Documentary' on UKIP last night?

Sort of attempted to walk us through the first hundred days of UKIP coming to power in the general election.

It was probably the most pathetic, risible piece of telly I've seen since I mistakenly turned on the One Show.

I think the fact that people think of UKIP as dangerously and radically right-wing speaks volumes for how lucky we are to live in this country.

political issues.

And '10 O'Clock Live' was one of the worst things I have ever seen.

It's quite some scam that they've managed to convince the hard of thinking people that Yerp is in someway the root of pretty much every problem in the country.

That said, they are hitting the sweet spot for your knee jerkers, that lovely little intersection of patriotism, xenophobia and anti-elitism.

A bunch of pensioners moaning about the EU does not make for a Nuremburg rally.

1975 (only without all the lefties). They have no radical agenda whatsoever. In short, they are ludicrous, but essentially harmless.

I think you just haven't met enough Nazis.

Real ones, I mean.

As is offering state jobs to all ex-service personnel to patrol areas with a high concentration of immigrants. Not to mention their proposals on worker's rights, which translates to basically removing them all.

Their manifesto/leaflet is quite a scary thing

Plus, of course, all that manifesto stuff is just nonsense. They know they'll never get to do any of it, so they can be as populist and nonsensical as they like. Like the Liberals used to be before everything got ruined by them actually getting into power.

centuries can hardly be described as a radical suggestion, I would have thought.

If anything, far less radical than the rather underhand process whereby that state of affairs ceased to be, in fact.

regimes you yearn for. We've had this before. I saw, first hand, the joys of communism. As far as I am concerned, a communist symapathiser is as evil and dangerous as a neo-Nazi.

Undoing all of that work within a single parliament, as they have proposed, would be radical in anybody's estimation.

imposition on our society you'd happily agree to disagree? You wouldn't be nervous if these views were accepted as mainstream and easily openly defended?

glwtpimo. I believe it's important that the consequences of these extreme political systems are remembered, so that we don't get led blindly back into them.

Just as an aside, how do you think life was for the average citizen under Ceaucescu? Better than in the flawed capitalist democracy of the UK in 2015, or worse?

All governmental structures are abusive, in one way or another. Capitalism may look great from your vantage point but it doesn't from other people's.

Here's some very general stuff. What makes me angry is that this is no secret - you know this is what it's like, but will continue to deny it by suggesting that our system is 'just as bad'.

It's dangerous.

It has about as much to do with what I believe as the IMF structured post-soviet Russia has to do with what you believe.

What does seem strange is that you refuse to see the bad points about our society - and in general the west - and employ the very same relativism and obfuscation and false parallels that you accuse me of in order to defend it.

What I don't see the need for is to knee-jerk knock everything about it, because the good makes it valuable and worth respecting and protecting.
