View Full Version : How many points are typically required to win the league? I note that, with a couple of exceptions,

our remaining fixtures are formalities.

How many points is it, then?

Chelsea won't lose five games.

Anyway, my question was - how many points are typically required to win the league?

Further to that, how many games do we have left?

But i would politely suggest that there isn't a hope in hell of us winning the league, or even getting close to it.

The total required to win the league is not the total achieved by the winner, but one point more than 2nd place (ignoring goal difference).

Over the last ten years this total has been:

2013-14 85
2012-13 79
2011-12 90
2010-11 72
2009-10 86
2008-9 87
2007-8 86
2006-7 84
2005-6 84
2004-5 84

The average (mean) of which is 84 points.
We have 45 points, with 13 games left for a maximum of 39, for a total of 84 points.

So it's going down to goal difference :hehe:

Our goal difference shouldn't be an issue after 13 straight wins.

Either that or there is a very slight and subtle flaw in the model's key assumption about points required, on the basis that if the winning team got less points the team in second might have got more - but it's very subtle and won't make any difference to such back-of-a-fag-packet calculation so up yours basically :vsign:

Only applies to the champions. For everyone else you need to get one more point than the champions, thus making them second placed :-)

E.g. In 2010/11, had manchester united got 72 points they would have won the league. For snyone else, 72 points would have seen them finish second, 8 points behind the champions, manchester united.

Likewise this season. Getting one point more than second placed is unlikely to win you the title :-)

But thanks for trying

We would not have won the league once. And almost certainly wont this season.

One more than second gets you second. One more than EVERYONE ELSE gets you first. To calculate what you need to win the league by discounting what the best team in the league got is utter nonsense.

Ashberto

My calculation was what the team that won the league might have been able to win it with. :homer:

I'll just re-run those numbers then...

Peter

Hence by statistical fact, we cannot win the league :-)

Always good to know.....
