View Full Version : So it turns out our childminder is being rather creative with the truth about how many children she

looks after. Bumped into another father outside her flat this morning who looked somewhat surprised when I told him my kid was with her too. Similarly, this chap's kid has never been mentioned to us, despite us explicitly asking her who she looks after.

My kid always seems in a decent mood when I pick him up, but I’m distinctly uncomfortable about being lied to by the one person in the world that I need to unequivocally trust.

We also have a suspicion she gives up trying to feed him his dinner (he is a massive pain in the arse to feed) and chucks away his food, giving us back an empty bowl so it looks like he's had it all.

What to do? :-(

The food thing's more of a worry. Does he come home really hungry?

Generally better practices, or at least more codified and regularly assessed.

We were very lucky with our first childminder, though. She was a natural and our daughter loved her.

We moved eventually, though. Every childminder after that was ****.

Not excusing it but it happens.

Certainly did with us.

Monty91

He does finish more of his nightime bottle when he's been with her, but he doesn't appear to be particularly hungry when I pick him up no. So I guess that is the biggest indicator that she's at least getting a fair amount down him.

But again, it is more the principle that she is pretty obviously lying to us.

You're just being over-sensitive because you've only just given him to her. You'll chill out in time.

And, as I say, it helped that our first childminder (who had her until she was five) was excellent.

was old enough to do so and went for 'Duncan'. :-(

Mind you, it's still better than 'Zowie', I suppose.

Monty91

All I can do is judge his mood at drop offs and pick ups, and if he seems happy enough I have to assume she's at least doing the basics well enough. But how can I know if she's "excellent"?

How do two people say the name "Duncan" out loud and think, "yeah, that's the one".

It's like that Eddie Izzard sketch about Engelbert Humpadink.

The fact that he was named after the only English Pope (his English catholic mother's fault) wasn't much of a consolation, I don't think.

Mind you, it could have been worse. One of his middle names is 'Fletcher' :-(

everyone you're an author for fecks sake.

Trust your instincts with the girl and observe how happy your kid is to be there. Look at your kid's face when you turn up and (s)he sees the minder, It will tell you everything you need to know.

Most or all creches should have an “educational” programme of sorts which they are expected to try to follow once the child goes beyond a certain age. Obviously when they are still an infant they just sit around on their arse all day playing with soft toys, or maybe eating them.

My mate took his kid out of a structure professional creche environment into a personal childminder. Turned out about 2 years later they found out professional childminding meant going round the girl’s grandmothers flat (on Sheriff Street) and watching television all day.

Kid was happy on collection, why wouldn’t he be.

Turned out about 4-5 they became concerned about his development and he is autistic.

That is not to say the end game would have been any different at all in a creche.
