View Full Version : The most 'communityesque' of a place I ever lived was in Lisburn, County Antrim.

I invaded as a wee nipper in '69 and stayed for a couple of years. "Ulster 71 - come and join the fun" :-| and of course the glorious double.

It was a cul-de-sac on the edge of town, mostly Prod, with a couple of families of the intruding Bruttish Steeut, but with one or two Catholic families. The kids all played together on the street and people were round each other's houses, but there was no sectarianism, even though we played "I am a gunman" etc. There were always helicopters in the sky, and although there were not troops at our street corner (too middle-class, perhaps), when driving around it would be normal to see them everywhere.

When I came back home I wondered where all the helicopters and soldiers were.

To be honest, it sounds pretty much identical.

Of course, the television news doesn't say that.

Mind you, the ignorance of the British about Ireland never ceases to amaze me. When I used to tell teachers or other adults my family was going on holiday to Ireland as a child, they all looked at me as if I said I was planning a city break in Beirut.

At least all of the other war torn outposts had decent weather.

They thought the RA were planting bombs in every car.

a British registered car. Not my Dad though. Got stopped by a surprising number of "Garda". Fortunately his accent combined with the presence of four kids in the back seat confirmed his Irish Catholicness
