We seem to sit on Thomas' shoulder, denied a broad view or indeed, a context for each scene; we peer claustrophobically at apparently unconnected events, yet find ourselves with just enough information to follow the narrative arc.

Rylance is a clever chap, as well.

remarkably naturalistic. I do love Rylance's acting, though. His puffed-up ebullience after knobbing his sister-in-law genuinely had me chuckling - until he found out Wolsey was dead of course.

I also like how genuinely unpleasant Thomas More is.

We know from Bolt and, indeed, Scofield, what a charming, if obstinate, man More was.

called Jasper Ridley. In it, you will realise that More was a dogmatic sadist who enjoyed torturing and burning protestants very much. Some of them at his own house. Vicious little c**t imo. Deserved a much nastier death than he got.

quite simply where everything happened, so, whether you get excited about them or not, if you want to understand European history, you'd better get down with the Kings 'n Queens and Dukes and Landgraves and Emperors 'n ****.

And good historical fiction is an excellent didactic tool. You'll learn more about the Tudors from Mantel's books than I'll wager you ever learned in school.

I'd counsel against the idea of learning stuff from dramatic recreations of anything though, purely on the grounds of how many filters it's been through.

You might as well listen to someone in a pub. It's entertainment, and what's more it's entertainment based on a subject I just don't find very interesting.

Dont kid yourself it's some sort of historical exercise.

Speak a lot of Latin and ancient French, do you? Go on a lot of archaeological digs?

All history - fictionalised or not - has been through untold numbers of filters. The trick is knowing what and whose the filters are and judging accordingly.

Besides, Mantel's historical research for these novels has been famously exhaustive and professional, so you'd be surprised.
