I've asked him to not call me sir four times now yet it's still "Hello Sir"

He sounds like C f**king 3PO

Asking him not to call you 'sir' just makes him think you're a tit.

Classic Jorge

He's my equal, there's no need to show me any deference.

Snin

shouldnt even be allowed a vote..make him call you boss imo

Berni
01-27-2015, 12:26 PM
thing, j. If you actually believed he was your equal, it wouldn't matter a damn to you what he called you. Your very insistence on not being called sir is, in fact, a monstrous act of condescension.

He calls you sir not because he thinks you're better than him (indeed, I'm fairly certain he thinks you're a prick), but because that's the form, it's how he's trained and because it maintains a polite and professional distance between you with which he's comfortable.

All the rest of it's going on in your head, not his.

I don't want to be called sir, I'm not comfortable with it. Of course, I've not told him not to call me it, I've asked him in a few indirect, polite and humorous ways.

His boss, who is a massive, arrogant ****er, usually sits on the phone with his feet up on the desk while this guy polishes his shoes, and he doesn't even acknowledge him :hehe:

If you dislike being called 'sir' that much, you must hate it in the states, where anyone in a customer-facing service job calls you 'sir'. To interpret that as deference rather than politeness is a very odd thing imo.

"Sir is an honorific address used as a courtesy title to address a man without using his given name or family name in many English speaking cultures. It is often used in formal correspondence (Dear Sir, Right Reverend Sir).

The term is often reserved for use only towards one of superior rank or status, such as an educator, or as a form of address from a merchant to a customer. It can also be used by a boy or young man to address an older man."

The Lanesborough. When The Savoy re-opened I asked him how he had enjoyed his time at The Lanesborough. His face became blank and impassive, with only the merest twitch of the lips to betray his inner pain. "It was... different, Sir Charlie" he confided. "The people..." here he almost cracked. "There were... Russians, and so on..."

He peered bleakly into the middle distance, but remains to this day somewhat broken by his experience.

It was you he was talking about, j. Chaps with no idea of form.

Quite the controversy, and she isn't ever our Queen.

I assume that was some sort of anti royal gesture, rather than just slobbishness?

Berni

Essentially, that is the history of how we achieved a more egalitarian and less deferential society - by giving the lower orders our cash.

probably best not to get to upset by it all.

I think LA nailed it - it spares the poor chap the need to remember, or even find out - your, and everyone else's, name. If I were him I would count that as a massive f**king blessing as I am hopeless with names, which apparently makes me a very bad person.
