At first I thought it was a character study of a man without much in the way of an interesting character to speak of. However, I thought about it a bit more and I think it is actually an interesting profile of a type that we refer to, but don't actually think about very much. That sort of Christian redneck gun-friendly American is a given archetype, but we never often think about where they come from or what motivates them, we just dismiss them.

In that sense, I think it's a more interesting and complex film than it's given credit for, actually.
