View Full Version : so labour will fight & possibly win the election on the back of the NHS

the same NHS that should be, at least, part privatised to survive?
I don't know why the Tories don't fight the argument on the basis that it HAS to be reformed

I mean, setting aside the fact that Labour did as much as the Tories did, if not more, to privatise it in the first place.

I'm not sure there's a single privatised service which is actually better than when it was nationalised. It may well be cheaper to the government but the consumer ends up paying anyway. Surely a properly nationalised service, with all the economies of scale that entails, would be the more sensible option. Competition has proven to have little or no effect on the cost or quality of anything.

really.

Also, there is no way Labour are going to win the next election. A swift glance at their front bench should tell you why.

Oh, and if they try to rely on SNP MPs for a majority, they're absolutely f**king doomed for generations to come.

Else.

It isnt a great thing to focus a campaign on. It is pretty negative goven that you are fighting to save it and that it is, ultimately, something that nobody wants to actually have to use. They just want to know that it is there.

Elections are fought over trust, confidence and taxes. Which is why labour cannot possibly win this one. They have a totally unelectable leader.

Whilst at the same time the tories are setting about dismantling anything in this country that makes life bearable for the people labour were supposed to represent.

Unforgivable stuff, not to mention hugely arrogant of them.

It seems very risky to be so unelectable for so long, if they end up losing their non dyed-in-the-wool voters

Peter
01-06-2015, 01:06 PM
And you have a government that allows the tories to deflect a huge portion of blame. 'Cant blame us gov, bloody coalition innit, give us a proper majority and we will do the job properly' etc

The important thing is that they fight a good campaign with ed as the only problem.

There is a chance there will be another election quite soon afterwards.....

Broadband, a pretty crucial bit of 21st century infrastructure, relying on market forces is a joke and one entirely predicated on a catch 22 as well.

He refused to change his working days cos it interfered with his private work .

He refused to change his surgical practice - ie he refused to change the types of operations he did on certain days. This meant he did all his pre-ops on a Monday - so a 32 bedded ward had to admit and discharge around 25 patients a day. And then he did around 8 full operations on a Friday and knocked off at 2pm.

The nurses on the ward did not have a f**king chance and it all led to massive inefficiency. And the Director did f**k all as it would updet the consultant.

All the NHS Trusts need is people at the top who want to run it like a proper f**king business, with the added bonus that it does not need to make massive profits.

Berni

it, at which point (once the relief of not being dead has worn off) they start thinking 'surely we can come up with something that is much less of an inefficient clusterf**k than this'? At which point they start thinking that maybe paying for GP appointments, reforming the NHS or whatever isn't actually that bad an idea.

I certainly don't believe that anyone who doesn't work in the NHS has ever actually changed their vote because of it. Labour voters will vote Labour and point to the NHS as one of the reasons for doing so, while Tory voters will point to it as a reason to vote Tory.

enjoy these benefits but what happened was that a costly layer (BT, ironically) was inserted between the hospital trusts and the supplier (eg Cerna) to try to standardise systems and delivery. It didn't deliver value, and the hospitals that were not in the programme were able, with the same money, to get more functionality from the supplier which more closely matched their requirements.

The programme was eventually scrapped and BT ran off laughing with their gargantuan profits which they spent on a massive loss-leader buy-up of Champions League TV rights in a bit to damage their new rival, Sky.

I know all large organisations have their chronic inefficiencies but some of the corrupt and/or incompetent senior 'consultancy' roles that deliver little or no value to the service are eye-watering. I hear first-hand tales that would make Sir C's hair fall out. Whether a more market-based service would be any better, I have no idea. Trusts with internal markets can be pretty **** as it stands.

He was the sole supplier to the NHS, could basically charge well above retail price for these bloody things and was subject to pretty much zero scrutiny or feedback as regarded quality. As long as the apples turned up, nobody gave a ****. Central purchasing at its finest.

with his phrase "rural idiocy".

There is a reason why economic activity mainly happens in towns. If a petty-bourgeois concern wants to set up their business in the middle of a moor somewhere because they happen to like the view, who should pay for their infrastructure to be connected? Them or the proletariat?

Anyway, welcome back to civilisation.

In those, innovation has to either be purchased or budgeted for. However, privately-owned companies are both highly innovative and profit-orientated.

Also, I am training her up to be a proper bookish geek. She'll be all about boys with 20 sided dice rather than ones with baseball bats, with any luck.

Also, one of the best Kevin Bridges jokes.

"40,000 baseball bats sold last year in Glasgow. Number of baseballs sold? Four. Somethin's nae right here"
