Surely served his time and therefore should be able to continue his career?

Not to mention there are players who seemed to have far stronger cases against them thrown out and are playing now

so he acan't very well come out and show remorse... but, should he be even playing until the appeal is heard?

Obviously this is a highly emotive crime but surely when the punishment is carried out the scales are balanced.

It's not as if he's seeking employment caring for drunken young women.

Criminal convictions carry with them a stigma that affects the individual long after his or her time is served. No-one would say 'he's served his time' if he had been found guilty of child molestation, beating up pensioners or various other heinous and despicable crimes, so what makes this case different? The answer, I fear, is that the victim was a woman whom people see fit to judge 'fair game' because she got drunk and went to bed with a footballer.

The strength of the case is irrelevant. He was found guilty and is a rapist. It is quite right that he should be considered toxic by football. Were he to admit his guilt and show some contrition, that might be another matter, but he has not, thus ensuring that his pariah status continues.

Would the 'scales be balanced'?

As was pointed out below, he's still appealing the verdict to he can't show any contrition.

If unsuccessful then perhaps he just donate a percentage of his wages to a charity

Clubs should be allowed to employ him, if they want to have such a characetr representing them 'front of house'.

I couldn't believe that both Lee Hughes and Ross McCormack were re-employed (and even made captain) after killing 2 kids during drink driving. Would Tesco's employ a CEO with such a history?

concept of a criminal record that endures beyond a criminal's incarceration.

Such records exist to warn people about the sort of person they are dealing with when making employment (or other) decisions. They are designed to stigmatise and we happily accept that as a society. All this 'he's served his time and should be allowed to move on' stuff is just so much special pleading being made by people who want to employ him and not get too much flak for it.

and carry on as though nothing had happened has no basis in law or societal norms.

What I am also saying is that I am much happier with a society that stigmatises rapists and is uncomfortable with them coming out of prison and taking up high-profile roles than one that does not and is not.

putting posters on your wall, buying stickerbooks, chanting their name at matches, and this develops into adult support that stays with us all for life.

Because of that, clubs have a big responsibility to make sure that the players they employ are well behaved, aren't racist scumbags, haven't killed people, haven't molested kids, haven't raped anyone etc etc. Much the same way that I'd be unhappy about ITV showing Rolf Harris re-runs, or Radio 1 playing Gary Glitter or H from Steps songs. The entertainment industry is very different to other industries. So, he shouldn't be prevented from working, but it should be very difficult for him to get a job where thousands of people see and hear about him every day

If he were simply allowed to walk back into his previous role, it would send the message that what he'd done was just an unfortunate blip and that it didn't really matter in the greater scheme of things. Society must be seen to punish such crimes over and above a piddling few months in jail.

The conviction and the queue of publicity-seeking c**ts lining up to deny the guy any kind of a living would suggest otherwise. The minute someone mentions the notion that perhaps he may have served his sentence they are accused of deeming drunk women as fair game?

I have some genuine concerns here. I notice that any discussion of his crime is greeted with derision as his conviction is a fact yet the sentence given on the basis of that conviction seems to be an irrelevance.

If he is not allowed to return to football then what should he do? Which professions are acceptable for a convicted rapist?

I'm clearly only commentating on what I've read about the case, if he's guilty then yes he's scum. Just pointing out that it's not the most cut and dried case

Is the punishment supposed to rehabilitate and deter or is it supposed to to be a means of permanently label someone?

In the case of rape, do all rapes get categorised equally across the board (in the eyes of the victims) or are there degrees of severity?
