I was chatting with a Sikh mate this weekend about the caste system in India and he was telling me about the prevalence of "Untouchability" by caste, still, today.

Apparently around half of his family over there still adhere to it, and he says it's more prevalent in Hundus. Less so in Muslims, apparently.

It came in to existance so that Hindus could fight the Mughals without not being Hindu, so to speak. The idea being that the eldest son in every "High Caste" Hindu family would preserve Hinuism by becoming a Sikh. Some sort of irony there.

All religions are tailored to fit a form of social acceptability, doesn't mean that, that is the why they came into existance.

Lots of Hindus in India and the surroundings moved away from being Hindu in order to escape the caste system, Christians and Muslims in particular. Sikhs have since made their own (sort of) system for determining those who are "legitimate" and those that "aren't".

They just make it a much more localised
