I'm guessing monty's hair is cut by his mum, using one of those special combs you used to see advertised at the back of the News Of The World.

would you expect some sort of tribute from Middlesex?

He must have the best average of any Middlesex player ever?

Fungusbum.

you wouldn't have thought it could be 'improved'.

Plus an additional charge of playing for his average imo.

Odd comment on the Middlesex website

"Out of respect to Phillip and his family, the Club and its staff will be making no further public comment."

Fairly sure everyman and his dog has had a say.

presumably he was critical of technique/shot selection?

I was doing work experience at the Guardian and was asked to do a phone interview with him for a weekly feature called "I was There when..." in which celebrities recalled their memories of a famous sporting event they attended.

He asked how long I'd worked at the Guardian and when I told him I was work experience he refused to let me do the interview and asked to speak to a "proper journalist".

Needless to say, I had the last laugh by going onto become a widely acclaimed author of picture books for the Under-6s market.

hard to see how anyone would take offence at some sort of positive tribute from an ex county.

Berni

and - more to the point - led players to attempt much riskier shots against fast bouncers than they did in the old days. Which is fair enough.

He also made the point that the risks in facing hostile fast bowling over a long period is why test cricket is the real judge of a batsman rather than one-day cricket.

outrageously pissed and being unable to stand.

Ben.

I have heard that mentioned before, almost a complacency.

Thing I don't understand is if you are not a great puller/hooker like Ponting, just duck (assuming it's a longer game and you're not chasing a target).
Bouncers require alot of effort there can be nothing more annoying than just seeing someone easily duck out of the way every time, even a top edge for four would encourage the bowler slightly.

Look at Steve Waugh - loved to hook but realised the risk (getting out rather than getting hit) so just stopped playing the shot

Berni

get you out of the way of it 999 times out of 1000. Ducking encourages a loss of vision.

the short ball (Viv Richards, for instance) or people who are very bad at it and try to meet fire with fire - of whom Hughes, sadly, was an example. Boycott also cut out the hook shot, realising the game simply wasn't worth the candle.

Luis Anaconda

and refused to contemplate wearing a helmet. Mind you, probably helped that most of the fearsome bowlers were on his side

Ben.
11-27-2014, 01:38 PM
I used duck as a generalisation for that, which I now realise was a bit ****.
You're right though ducking does leave you susceptible to a surprise hit if the ball doesn't get up or skids on, although swaying the ball can follow you sometimes so I guess nothing is perfect.
